Smithfield Police have charged a 19-year-old Clifton Beach man with common assault and unlawful possession of a knife in public following an incident on Coral Coast Drive on Saturday afternoon. Police allege that a 60-year-old truck driver stopped to ask the man for directions when he allegedly produced a knife before trying to remove the victim’s spectacles. The victim then drove off in his truck and raised the alarm. Police located and arrested the alleged offender on the Palm Cove beach a short time later. He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on April 27.
