A 53-year-old North Cairns man was arrested and charged with assault on Tuesday evening following a dispute with a taxi driver. It is alleged the man got into the cab in the city at about 6pm and requested to be taken to Portsmith. An argument subsequently ensued and the driver stopped near the intersection of Spence and Draper Streets. The man allegedly exited the cab before approaching the 35-year-old driver and striking him around the head and fleeing. Police located and arrested the man a short time later. He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 6. Fortunately the driver was not injured as a result of the incident.
