Detectives from the Cairns CIB have charged a 26-year-old Manoora man for allegedly being in possession of a sawn off firearm at Redlynch on Sunday. It was reported to police that the man was seen in Margaret Street with the weapon wrapped in a towel. After investigations police arrested the man in Woree on Monday afternoon and it is alleged he attempted to flee into bushland when accompanying police to a location to allegedly recover the firearm. He was apprehended without incident. A search warrant was subsequently executed at a North Cairns residence and it is alleged that a sawn–off rifle was located and seized. The man has been charged with unlawful possession of a concealable firearm; unlawful supply and possession of a dangerous drug; obstructing police and a number of traffic and Bail Act offences. He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later today.
