Man faces numerous charges over Bentley Park incidents

A 22-year-old Cairns man is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today following a string of offences allegedly committed in the Bentley Park area overnight.

Around 10.30pm, it is alleged a man entered a Somerset Close residence yard and threatened a male resident with a knife before damaging a rubbish bin.

The man then allegedly stole a motor vehicle from an Adventure Close property, drove to the intersection of Cintra Street and Robert Road and allegedly performed a serious of “burn-out” type activities before crashing into a nearby school building.

A local male resident who attended the school grounds following the crash was allegedly assaulted by the man. It is further alleged he then ran to a nearby property and assaulted another person while also damaging a sign and a letterbox.

Police attended and pursued the man on foot through the school grounds and a number of residential properties before apprehending him.

The 22-year-old man has been charged with a total of 13 offences including unlawful possession of a knife, threatening violence, trespass, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, drink driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, assault, willful damage and obstructing police.

Edmonton Police Officer in charge Senior Sergeant Jason Smith has praised the efforts of both local residents and his officers in apprehending the alleged offender.

“This is a terrific example of the community and Police working in partnership,” Senior Sergeant Smith said.

“Several local residents provided invaluable information which directly enabled the police officers to take this man into custody without injury, it was a great result.”
