The Missouri compromise was designed to help ease tensions between pro slavery and anti slavery factions. The result however only further divided the nation into slave and free states. The Compromise called for all states with the exception of Missouri, North of the 36 30 line, to be free territories, while everything South of the line to be slave territories. The compromise also admitted Maine as a free state and Alabama as a slave state.
