Granville Street.

The stunning facade of the Mitchell Theatre was preserved from the St Andrews Halls, which were destroyed in a fire in 1962. Fortunately the sculptures along the facade and the amazing entrance have all survived and still look very impressive.

These sculpted figures were made by the prolific John Mossman and represent artforms such as music and painting. Along the wall are the names of famous artists, composers, such as Beethoven and Bach. The original building was designed by James Sellars in 1877.

Mossman's powerful doorway features these strong figures called "Atalantes". They appear to be holding up the lintel of the door. You can see other Atalantes at the Bank Of Scotland building (corner of George Square and St Vincent Street). These were carved by John Mossman's father William.
