Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl
Category: Abandoned Ski Areas
**November 2011**
Trails: Just as they were since, well, Shasta's last eruption I suppose. This area was once billed as the "World's Largest Ski Bowl".
Lifts: The reason that the Ski Bowl went under was because of frequent avalanches that would damage the lifts. There might be some old footings up there under the snow, but good luck finding them.
Facilities: The portion of the road leading up to where the main lodge is/was was closed for the winter at this point, so I didn't get a chance to see if it's still up there.
Accessibility: The last few miles of the road were closed during my visit, but during the summer it's possible to reach the end of the road where the ski bowl proper began.
Skiability: Shasta is home to some of the country's most epic backcountry skiing, and the old ski bowl is still skied regularly to this day. However, avalanches are still a constant danger so make sure to carry a beacon, take some avi classes, and BE PREPARED.
