Necropolis
Category: Park/public space
Glasgow Necropolis- 'the Great Grey Rock,is a stunning Victorian cemetery, designed by landscape gardener David Mylne and opened in 1833. It has many impressive monuments to the city's upper classes. The biggest of the monuments is the towering column and statue of John Knox (1513-72), the church reformer, (far left of picture) erected in 1825.
The Necropolis is huge with many interesting things to see and it is well worth spending a bit of time exploring it properly!
Glasgow City Council have designed their own Necropolis Heritage Trail to guide visitors around the place, which also identifies 35 different sites of interest. For more information and a printable pdf map of the Necropolis Heritage Trail, see: http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/Parks_Outdoors/HeritageTrails/GlasgowNecropolis/necropolisheritagetrail.htm
