Nelson's Monument,
Glasgow Green
Viscount Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was Britain's most famous naval hero. He was admiral of the British fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar, where the British navy fought against the combined fleets of the French and Spanish navies. Nelson was killed in the battle, and the sense of loss in Britain was so great that monuments appeared very quickly in Nelson's honour. This 144 foot obelisk was the first monument in Britain erected in honour of Nelson. It was erected in 1806 by public subscription, and was designed by David Hamilton and A. Brockett.
