The castle was built in 1357 during the reign of Galeazzo Visconti and on the site of a 13th century fortress. From 1472 onwards, with the intervention of the Sforza family, the castle was entirely renovated by architect Bartolomeo Gadio, going on to assume the austere and solid appearance it still retains today.
