Brisbane PARK(ing) Day 2008

Pyungwon, Peter, Laisiasa, Daniel
9am - 3pm

The PARK title, "Coup d' Car", describes the key concepts involved in this project. It is simply a play on words of the phrase "Coup d’état" which defines the sudden overthrow of a government, usually by the military. Linguistically, "Coup d’état" is French for “a strike to the state” or coup [blow], d’ [to the] état, [state]. So by replacing état with car, the project describes the overthrow of the car as a dominant power over our lives.

Although the car appears to be helpful, much like a healthy government, to the educated eye it is corrupt. It has imparted so many restrictions onto our lives that we overlook as citizens of its control. The car has done this by claiming so much territory for parking and roads and by shaping our vast cities. But more importantly, it has forced us to neglect the simple things we can admire when we are not influenced by the speed and frames of view it provides when we are behind the steering wheel and windscreen.

So infact, we are not in control of the car as we may believe; it is in control of us. Knowing this, the PARK intends to perform a "Coup d' Car", not only by taking back the territory that was originally ours, but by taking back the experience, the time and the views it has stolen, by means of architectural elements.
