1. The Khehmer Rouge toppled the U.S. backed Lon Nol regime in April of 1975. Pol Pot was behind this take over but Prince Sihanouk was used as a public figure head. Approximately 2,000,000 people were evacauted from the city, even those who were patients in hospitals. Many even died while being led out of the city, approximately 20,000, due to lack of sustenance.
The United States responded by evacuating all of its citizens, and proceeded to keep its hands off of Cambodia, mostly due to negative sentiment from its recent luck with Vietnam.
