Detectives are appealing for assistance from the public following a violent assault and robbery that occurred in Manunda this morning.

At about 6.45am a 57-year-old woman was seated at a bus stop shelter on Anderson Street when a male offender approached her on foot and snatched her purse before running off. The victim then used her mobile telephone to seek assistance and whilst doing so the offender returned and punched her a number of times in the face, before stealing her phone and running off.

The offender was last seen running into bush land in the area between the Queensland Ambulance complex and the Cairns cemetery. The woman was transported to the Cairns Base Hospital for observation.

The offender is described as being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander male, 165cm tall and of slim build. He is aged in his mid twenties and was wearing a blue t-shirt and chequered pattern shorts. He was also wearing white socks with joggers and possibly a green cap.
