Prince Albert (1819-1861)
Moving towards the SW corner of the square, the next statue is an equestrian statue of Prince Albert, matching the previous one of Queen Victoria. Prince Albert was the consort, or husband, of Victoria, and he was present with the Queen on the visit made to Glasgow in 1849. This sculpture was also made by Baron Carlo Marochetti (1805-1867), and shows Albert mounted on a horse in the same position as the horse of Victoria. Also facing west, he has his plumed hat in his right hand, and stands on a plinth with two elaborate scenes rendered in bas-relief. The north face of the plinth shows figures representing the arts; Sculpture, Music, Literature and Painting. On the south face, a frieze represents agricultural richness and industrial strength, with images of a cornucopia, a steam engine, a cogwheel and sailing ships.
