Apartheid lasted from 1948 to 1994 when democratic elections were held. Although Apartheid has ended, people of different races in small towns still live very different lives. Also, racism is being reinforced by economic inequalities. There is a non-black minority enjoying high living standards while the black majority is impoverished.
