Address:
Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Category: Genocide
July 11, 1995. Ratko Mladic, the commander of the Bosnian Serb army, invaded Srebrenica, one of the designated three Muslim safe havens within Bosnia. Within the first week following the invasion, Mladic's forces slaughtered 7,000 muslim, primarily men. They rendered the Dutch peace keepers led by Tom Karremans, ineffective and made them watch the mass deportation or execution of the town's 40,000 citizens. This massacre including genocidal acts that renewd world interest and concern for the Muslims in Bosnia. Without the horrendous acts in Srebrenica, US and NATO may never have gotten involved at all and the genocide may never have ended or would have succeeded in making Bosnia a Muslim-free nation.
