Police are investigating a serious assault that occurred at about 11pm on Monday April 25. Two 16-year-old girls left a shopping centre via Aplin Street, Cairns when they were approached by a group of approximately 10 youths aged from about 13-18-years. One girl was punched and knocked to the ground before her handbag was stolen. She sustained bruising and scratches to her face and body. Her friend was also assaulted however attempted to obtain help. She managed to flag down two young men who intervened and the group fled. A “Mooloola’ handbag was stolen and is described as being brown leather in appearance. The girls were walking along Aplin Street toward the Esplanade at the time of the assault. The suspects are described as:
1. Female of Aboriginal appearance, dark complexion, about 17-18-years, 160-170cm, solid build, black curly hair in a pony tail. She was wearing a tight hot pink t-shirt with black shorts.
2. Female of Aboriginal appearance with a light complexion, wavy longer hair, 160cm, solid build and about 16-years with unknown clothing description.
3. Female of Torres Strait Island appearance, dark complexion, 160-170cm, short brown curly hair with unknown clothing description.
4. Female of Aboriginal appearance, 160-170cm, solid build, black curly hair tied in a bun, 17-18-years. She was wearing a tight black and white horizontal striped t-shirt.
Suspects 5, 6 and 7 were all female, of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance aged about 16-17 years. Suspects 8, 9 and 10 were all male, of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance and aged 13-15 years. One boy was riding a silver scooter.

Police are appealing for the two men who stopped to assist the girls to contact police.
