Born to a mechanic who loved structural patterns and a mother who created beauty with whatever was at hand – plus spending a childhood in and around rusting cars and car parts - perhaps made Roberta Meilleur’s desire to collect and create with rusty metal inevitable. She’s been bringing home bits of it for over thirty years. Her early assemblages were strengthened in the 80’s by her involvement in the Imagination Market – an arts and recycling organization that collected manufacturer’s scrap and discards for creative re-use. Her inaugural show was at Imagination Market’s Found Art Gallery in 1990. Roberta moved to the Comox Valley that year and began exhibiting pieces in group shows at the Arts Alliance and Community Arts Council in Courtenay and the Schoolhouse Gallery in Qualicum. She held a solo show entitled “From An Iron Garden” in 1995 at the Arts Alliance Craft Gallery. Roberta is also a dancer, teacher, movement coach and a healthcare practitioner currently residing in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.
