In 1213 the "Tower of the Modenese People" and other defensive structures against the family guelfa of the Extensive ones was raised to work of the modenesi Ghibellines. After more than a century the castle returned to the Extensive ones and in 1402 Nicolò III of Este incaricò to restore it, transforming the disadorna roccaforte military in one refined signorile residence, with ducali apartments and variopinte decorations
