Hutus and Tutsi, although they both inhabit Rwanda, they have been opposing ethnic groups. The President (Habyarimana), ruling from 1937, is killed once the plane was shot down as it departed from the Kigali airport. It was believed that the Hutus were behind the act of crime.
Systematic killing began that night.
Thousands of Tutsis were killed the day after. That day, the UN forces failed to intervene in the process and peacekeepers were also killed.
