S. Frank Rogers Shooting
Address:
North Foot of Gore Ave
Vancouver, BC, CA
Category: Sites from the 'Labour, Work and Working People' booklet
A fisherman, seaman and longshoreman, Rogers was a prominent socialist and union leader who also led the Fraser River salmon strike of 1900-1901 (See site 'C')
On April 13th 1903 two CPR strikebeakers fired on Rogers as he participated in support picketing for the striking United Brotherhood of Railway Engineers. Frank Rogers, aged 35, died two days later. The CPR paid for the defense attorney hired by the two assasains. One assasain had charges dropped due to insufficient evidence and a judge acquitted the other of all charges in the unprovoked shooting.
Workers rallied at city hall to protest Rogers' shooting and the judge's decision. Labour paid for his funeral. He was buried at mountain view cemetery in the Horne block near 33rd and Fraser.
