Self Portrait as a Drowned Man

Paranomal Atlas

In 1840 Hippolyte Bayard created his 'Self Portrait as a Drowned Man', a photograph with the claim of being the first to be staged (or hoaxed). It shows Bayard as a drowned man, propped up in a seated position, decay starting to appear on his face and hands.

Although not a 'paranormal' photo we will be featuring a range of fake, fraud and hoax photos and thought it appropriate to start with the very first staged photograph. Plus it is a facinating piece of macabre history!
