Detectives are investigating an overnight disturbance which has left a 38-year-old man fighting for his life in a Townsville hospital.

The incident occurred at about 11.40pm on Tuesday outside a Sheridan Street apartment complex.

Preliminary inquiries indicate that a number of men were involved in a physical altercation that resulted in the victim stumbling backwards and striking his head on the concrete driveway at the complex.

The man was transported to the Cairns Base Hospital with a serious head injury and was subsequently airlifted to Townsville where he remains in a critical condition.

A number of people are assisting police with their inquiries, and investigators are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident. QP1100745423
