Quake rocks Indonesia's Aceh

A tectonic quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale rocked Aceh Singkil District, Aceh Province of Indonesia, at about 11:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.

The tremor was also felt in Gunung Sitoli, Nias and Sibolga, North Sumatra, said official news agency Antara.

An official of the Meteorological and Geophysics Office for First Territory of North Simatra, Hartono, said the epicenter of the quake was in Sumatra Island's western coast or about 15 km from Aceh Singkil.

He said the quake was laid at 2.2 degrees northern latitude and 97.7 degrees eastern longitude.

A strong tectonic quake measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale, which triggered lethal tidal waves devastated coastal areas of Aceh on Dec. 26, 2004, killing over 200,000 people.
