Sir John Moore (1761-1809)
Sir John Moore was a famous soldier, born in Glasgow. His statue, raised by public subscription, stands on the south side of George Square. It was made by John Flaxman RA (1755-1826) and was the first statue in George Square, erected in 1819. Moore was Commander In Chief of the British forces at the Battle Of Corunna during the Peninsular War (1808- 1814). This war, fought between Napoleon's French forces and the combined forces of Britain, Spain and Portugal, finally caused the death of Sir John, and he was buried at Corunna in 1809. Flaxman himself appears in a statue by John Mossman on the Atheneum, Buchanan Street.
