Site of Poet Campbell's House

Category: Historic Building/Architectural Interest

Used in the following map:

Trail 3- Merchant City/ Trongate

215 High Street.

This building marks the site of poet Campbell (1777-1844.)

Few of the buildings in this part of High Street have as much ornate decoration as other areas of Glasgow City Centre, however 215 High Street, the former British Linen Bank (1905, Salmon, Son & Gillespie) has some Renaissance styling, a cupola roof and a crowstepped gable. Pallas, the Greek goddess of wisdom and weaving tops the building, a fitting figure to remind us of the building's former purpose.

A plaque on the side of the building displays the incription: "On this site stood the house in which the poet Campbell lived. Born 1777. Died 1844." The plaque also shows a gabled house and people dressed in early nineteenth-century styles.

Thomas Campbell`s statue still stands in George Square.
