Formerly St. George's Lane, this street was named after a church dedicated to St. George, which stood here in 1181. It was rebuilt in 1213 and stood until 1586. The South City Markets opened in 1881, designed by Lockwood and Mawson. The area had previously held the Castle Market in the 18th century.
