St Mungo, Glasgow Museum & Art Gallery, Dumbarton Road.
This massive bronze statue of Glasgow's patron saint, St Mungo, was made by George Frampton in 1897. It sits at the north entrance and shows the saint with figures who symbolise art and music.
The figure of St Mungo is over 10 feet high, which gives you a sense of the importance he holds in Glasgow, as well as the difficulty encountered by the sculptor. The details of the lace work and embroidery on his robes is very fine, and his face has been modelled to look wise and calm. He holds a staff bearing the symbols of the city - a bell, tree, fish and bird. Click for more details about St Mungo and the history Glasgow.
