St Mungo Museum
Category: Historic Building/Architectural Interest
St Mungo Museum of Religious Life & Art, Castle Street.
This building was erected in 1990 and was designed by the architect Ian Begg. It houses information and exhibits about all kinds of religions from around the world. In the museum you can see religious artefacts from the history of Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and many other faiths.
The building itself defines the edge of Cathedral Precinct. It is related to historic Scots architecture, and incorporates borrowed features such as medieval turrets and pointed arch windows. Before the museum was built, the area around the Cathedral lacked definition and was very open. Now, with some careful planning by architects Page and Park, the precinct is much more successfully arranged and attracts many visitors from home and abroad.
