Statue of Joseph Lister, Near Kelvin Way.
Baron Joseph Lister (1827-1912) was a very important doctor and surgeon who pioneered the use of antiseptics during surgical operations. Lister's discoveries saved the lives of countless numbers of people who would otherwise have died of infections during routine surgery. This statue is by G.H. Parkin and was erected in 1924. It shows him seated and wearing his academic robes, and the plinth on which he is placed carries the sign of snakes coiling around a torch, an ancient icon to symbolise the medical profession.
