Earth Day Events

April 19th 2008- May 10th
9am-12noon

On Earth Day, we will be running a special class called “Clean Air Achievers.” Each program has a special guest athlete, or Clean Air Champion, leading the students along, and our athlete is Mike Kwiatkowski, a champion snow boarder. Registration for the program can be done through Clean Calgary Association at lindsay@cleancalgary.org. What is the Clean Air Achievers Program? “This program lets you be part of the solution to air pollution, smog and climate change AND helps you get fitter at the same time. When you choose to travel in a less polluting, more active way, you will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), but also improve your fitness (and who doesn’t want that?). Our Clean Air Champions are with you every step of the way.” http://www.cleanairachievers.ca/ When does it take place? The Clean Air Achievers Program can happen any time during the year, and is often completed by schools. The TELUS World of Science – Calgary and Clean Calgary Association have partnered to offer this program to students who are not participating through their class at school and have an interest in protecting the environment and getting active. Our program takes place in three parts. Once registered, students will be sent an e-package including pre-activities that must be completed before they arrive on Saturday, April 19th. Part 1: On April 19th, registered students should arrive at the TELUS World of Science (701 11 Street SW) at 8:45am to sign-in and head to the Discovery Dome Theatre. At 9:00am, our Champion Mike, will give a 1 hour presentation, followed by a Q&A session. Parents are strongly encouraged to join their children. The students will wrap up at 10:50am so that there is no worry about public attending the 11:00am Dome Show. Following the Champion’s speech, students will be given a workbook to log their active transportation for a two week period, starting on the 19th. Students will also be given log-in information to the Clean Air Achievers website for activity tracking. Part 2: On Saturday, May 3rd, registered students may return to the TELUS World of Science for a two hour workshop on an environmental issue from 9:00-11:00am. The workshop has not been confirmed at this time. Part 3: Students must complete their tracking and have it entered online at http://www.cleanairachievers.ca/ by Wednesday, May 7th, 2008. Results will be complied by the Clean Calgary Association. Students return to the TELUS World of Science on Saturday, May 10th at 9:00am for their Graduation Ceremony. Our Champion will present each student who has completed the Challenge with a certificate. Students will then be encouraged to take what they have learned into their community and continue their active transportation. The Graduation Ceremony will wrap-up by 10:30am. Who Can Participate in the Program? Students between the ages of 12-15 are the target audience for this program. Students that are outside of this range may also enroll with confirmation from Lindsay at Clean Calgary Association. What is the cost to Participate in the Program? There is a $5.00 registration fee for each participant. Subsidies are available through the Clean Calgary Association. Who is our Clean Air Champion? Our Champion is Mike Kwiatkowski, and his sport is Snowboarding. Mike’s profile can be found here. What if I have more Questions? Feel free to contact Erin McDonald at erin.mcdonald@calgaryscience.ca or Lindsay Luhnau at lindsay@cleancalgary.org for answers to any other questions you might have about the program.
