Imagine you are a conductor on the underground railroad. What are some of the consequences that you face if you are caught aiding slaves?

You could be given a fine for helping slaves. One couple was fined $4,000 for helping a slave, an extremly large amount in those days.
You could also be thrown in jail for several years. Some conductors even died in jail.
Those that we suspected of aiding slaves would be subjected to multiple searches by the law and some were even tarred, feathered and run out of town.
