The Italian Centre
Category: Urban Design
Located on the corner of John Street and Ingram Street in the north part of the Merchant City.
The Italian Centre was among the first pieces of commercial, private sector-led urban regeneration attempted withing Glasgow's Merchant City and arguably the most successful.
It was remodelled by Page & Park 1990-91, transforming derelict early 19th Century tenements into a very stylish mixture of apartments, 'haute couture' shops, cafes and restaurants. The central 'courtyard' connecting these homes and businesses is made more notable still, by the addition of various artworks by Stoddart, Kinloch and Sloan.
Adding to this prestigious & luxurious setting are stockists of many famous brands including Versace Collections (the UK's first Versace store) and Emporio Armani, as well as a number of European style pavement cafes.
Designers by Page & Park Architects are fond of including art in their architecture and this example is no exception. Here the Art is integral to the facdes, but also features prominantly in the courtyard.
Page & Park Architects are located in the northwest corner of the Italian Centre.
