The Old Glasgow High School
Category: Historic Building/Architectural Interest
Elmbank Street.
This building was erected in 1847 to the designs of Charles Wilson. It housed the Glasgow Academy and then the Glasgow High School. In 1976 it was changed to the headquarters of Strathclyde Regional Council, which used to be the local authority for the west of Scotland. The four sculptures around the door represent Cicero, Galileo, James Watt and Homer. These figures represent the arts and sciences of the past which have revolutionised the western world. For instance Galileo (right) was an astronomer who invented a unique kind of telescope and made many discoveries about the universe. These sculptures were all made by John Mossman.
