The Old Mill

Category: Contemporary Public Art

Used in the following map:

Glasgow Green and Gorbals Art Trail

The Old Mill, Old Rutherglen Road.

This striking building can be seen from a long distance and has a dramatic roof shape. It also has this curious sculpture on top of its chimney. It was made by Rita McGurn & Russell Lamb, and it shows a little cloud of smoke rising from the chimney. But the mill is no longer open, and so the sculpture is a small reminder of the industry which used to thrive here. It is made of fibreglass and has a special joint at the base which allows it to move gently in the breeze. On a sunny day the silver surface glints in the sun and can be seen from quite a distance.
