Thomas Campbell (1777-1844)

A few paces away from Lord Clyde stands a bronze of the poet Thomas Campbell. His likeness was made by John Mossman in 1877, and was cast by Cox & Sons, Founders, who also cast the figure of Burns. Campbell is best remembered for his poem "The Pleasures Of Hope" (1799), but was also associated with the founding of the University Of London in the 1820s. Campbell is shown holding a quill pen and papers, and is wearing fine clothing - tasseled boots, a fine cape and a great fur collar.
