Thomas Graham (1805-1869)
In the SE corner of the square sits the figure of Thomas Graham, a famous scientist. The statue, erected in 1872, was modelled by William Brodie, RSA (1815-1881) and was cast by the founders R. Masefield & Co.
Graham was a Professor Of Chemistry at Andersons College, which later became The University Of Strathclyde. He was also Master Of The Mint from 1855. He is seen seated, resting his elbow on his chin and holding a book. He wears a cape and sits on a fine padded chair with carvings.
