Tokeiji Temple, formally known as Shokozan Tokeiji, is the only surviving nunnery in Kamakura of the five that originally existed, that served as a refuge for women who had been mistreated by their husbands. Tokeiji Temple is sometimes also referred to as the "Divorce Temple".
Tokeiji Temple was completed in 1285 to enshrine Hojo Tokimune, but his wife, Kakusan-ni, also opened the temple to women as a nunnery. It was not until 1902 that men were allowed to enter the temple.
