This small, attractive tower by the sea, decorated with a statue of the Madonna of Mercy, is of 14th-century origin and takes its name from the Savona-born navigator who accompanied Ferdinand Magellan on his sea voyages, but who died tragically in 1537 on the Rio della Plata. On the seaward side a verse by Gabriello Chiabrera dedicated to the Madonna and in Latin (which coincides exactly with the Italian) reads: 'In this raging sea, this sudden storm, I beseech thee, oh guiding star'.
