Tron Kirk Steeple

Category: Monument/memorial

Used in the following map:

Trail 3- Merchant City/ Trongate

Tron Kirk by architect James Adam (1793).

The steeple dates from 1631 and is one of the oldest buildings in the Merchant City.

The Tron started as a church back in the early 16th century and was redeveloped by RMJM Architects in 1999 at a cost of £5m. Much of the exterior was retained with subtle postmodern reworking. The body of the church (the kirk)became the new auditorium.

The Tron Theatre was established as a theatre club in 1979 (going fully public in 1989), rising from the ashes of the destroyed Close Theatre, based at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow.

Located next to Glasgow Cross the theatre is in the heart of the Merchant City.
