In 2005, Tupac Shakur became the first rapper to be immortalized – not in gold, but in bronze. The statue, together with its base, stands over ten-feet tall. Despite Shakur’s association with gangs, as well his ultimate murder by drive-by shooting, the dedication of the statue met with little controversy. Recently however, a series of incidents have prompted detectives from local police and investigators from the Department of Homeland Security to probe the safety of the statue. In early October 2007, a noose was placed upon Tupac’s neck. Later that month a series of flyers bearing reference to the 9/11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina and various gang threats were plastered on the statue.
