Umatilla Electric Co. was incorporated on June 18, 1937 in conjunction with the Rural Electrification Act of 1935. It provided electricity for rural Hermiston. It also provided electricity to pump water for agriculture, making Hermiston the ideal place for farmers. Previously, electricity was only available to densely populated cities.
