United Distillers Building
Category: Historic Building/Architectural Interest
64 Waterloo Street
This unusual building has some really beautiful details. It was built in 1900 to the design of James Chalmers. It has always been the office of a distillery, and the figure of the woman standing at the corner carries a malting shovel used in making whisky. The strange spiralling turrets are called "baldacchini". You can also see intricately detailed crests carved into the red sandstone. Over the doorway are two Highlanders, who are said to represent the whisky sold by the original owners, Wright and Greig. One of them is even named "Roderick Dhu" after a brand of whisky.
