Velvet Rooms

Category: Historic Building

Used in the following map:

Glasgow Garnethill Art Trail

Velvet Rooms, Sauchiehall Street

This unusual building used to be the Vitograph Cinema, which opened in 1915. It is now a bar and nightclub - probably the only nightclub in Glasgow with elaborate sculpted figures on the facade. Although the sculptor is unknown, the angel figure with the pipes is said to symbolise Victory. The right hand figure carries an instrument called a lyre, and represents Music.
