VILLA MARCELLA in Cavriglia was built in the 19th century as the summer residence of an aristocratic family.

It was originally called "Fattoria Monastero" as its vineyards, which produced excellent Chianti wines, stretched as far as the Cavriglia Monastery.

The house has the elegance and charm of the period and some of the rooms still retain the original frescos. It is pleasantly furnished with country style furniture of the period. There is also a small collection of photographs taken by Marquis Giovanni Gargiolli who was an engineer and an inventor. He built one of the first cameras in Italy and in 1892 he was appointed director of the National Photographic Institute in Rome. A man of many interests, he was a friend of Guglielmo Marconi, the writer Carlo Lorenzini (alias Collodi, the author of Pinocchio), the composer Giacomo Puccini and the poet Giosuè Carducci. These famous people were occasionally guests at the house.
