Cairns Detectives attached to Operation Colossal have arrested and charged a 16-year-old boy in relation to large number of offences committed over a period of about three months.
The youth was apprehended by detectives near Hammond Court at Mooroobool at about 9am yesterday.
Officer in Charge of the Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit, Detective Senior Sergeant Glen Horan said that the youth’s apprehension was the culmination of weeks of painstaking work carried out by his staff.
“His apprehension was pivotal to the continued success of Operation Colossal. The youth has allegedly been the principal offender amongst the many youths targeted during this operation, and we anticipate this will reflect positively on current property crime figures as a result,†he said.
The youth has been charged with a total of 89 offences including burglary; unlawful use of motor vehicles; assaults occasioning bodily harm; stealing and wilful damage. He is still assisting detectives with inquiries in relation to further offences. He will be dealt with under the provisions of The Youth Justice Act 1992
Detective Sergeant Alisha Keogh, who is leading the operation, said that more than 50 offenders have been charged with over 400 offences since Colossal commenced just on six weeks ago.
“We have a great team of investigators who are committed to addressing property crime issues across Cairns. I have no doubt that this operation is delivering on those issues.â€
The operation will continue to target the commission of property crime in the Cairns area.
