The Buildings of Alfred S. Alschuler

Built in 1939 by Alfred Alschuler (interiors by famous industrial designer Raymond Loewy) for W.T. Grant, a five-and-dime chain. The site next to an existing W.T. Grant store was purchased, and the new moderne store became the biggest in the chain when it was eventually built after the business recovered from the Great Depression.

Demolished in 1980.



"Also lost (in 1980) was the fabulous art deco W.T. Grant Store at the NW corner of Huron and Main Street...Designed by Alfred Alschuler and Raymond Loewy. Mike at shadesofgray wrote, "Raymond Loewy was one of the most important designers of the 20th century and was often referred to as the “Father of Industrial Design”. Loewy designed everything from household appliances to Studebakers to buildings to streamliner trains."
