Barclay House

Education

Dr. Barclay came from Scotland to Fort Vancouver as a Hudson's Bay Company physician in 1840. In 1850, he and his wife Maria Pambrun Barclay and their seven children moved to Oregon City where he served variously as mayor of Oregon City, superintendent of schools and the first coroner in Oregon, as well as a physician. Their home, built in 1849, remained in the Barclay family until the 1930's, when it was moved up the hill from the waterfront to its present location adjacent to the McLoughlin House.

2009 Portland Rose Festival History & Roses Tour presented by Windermere

In celebration of the Rose Festival’s strong ties to Portland history, this year’s History & Roses Tour presented by Windermere showcases a selection of vintage Portland area homes, landmarks and gardens. Each location has its own tradition or historical significance involving the Rose Festival and offers a glimpse of early Portland life when the festival was young.

This year we expand the Tour to include Oregon City's historical heritage in honor of Oregon's 150th.

Locations on the Tour are open various dates and hours; each location on the Tour may charge an admission rate. Discounts are available with the History & Roses Tour Passport, which can be purchased for $5 at the Rose Festival office or Dennis’ 7 Dees landscaping and garden centers.

Go to www.RoseFestival.org for additional tour site and Passport details.
