Treasury Building/National Museum

Tourist Attraction

9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.

Upstairs, the National Museum of St. Kitts is housed in an historic landmark building in downtown Basseterre. It is filled with history and the exhibitions mounted there reflect the rich natural and cultural heritage of the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The building was conceived as the gateway to Basseterre in the days when the main access to the town was by sea.

Completed in 1894 this two story stone structure, built in the Georgian Style adapted to the Caribbean, has housed almost every government department at one time or another.

The building’s central archway with its massive wrought iron gates today bridges the historic city centre of Basseterre and the newly reclaimed land of Port Zante, which now occupies the space where the sea once was.

They also sell 2nd-hand books for $1US/each proceeds to benefit the trust. (bring old books for them to sell too).
