Loveworks Academy - - 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS: Charter School Investigation - Of the 143 charter schools in Minnesota, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS obtained the teacher lists for 119 of those schools, and compiled a list of 1,792 teachers. We compared that list with the Minnesota Department of Education's list of 91,000 licensed teachers. Initially we found 184 teachers at 65 different schools who were not listed on the state database. We e-mailed the principal or director of each school to confirm our findings. We found many teachers who had a different legal name on their teaching license and other teachers who were no longer with the school. Background:
On Nov. 10, the Department of Education alerted LWA that it was withholding $62,227.78 in state funding for two violations. The state determined during an unscheduled check on Oct. 29, that unlicensed teachers were teaching in two classrooms. The teachers were Marcy Goettl and Sheila Shambley. The Department of Education began warning LWA of unlicensed teachers in Aug. 2008.

An attorney for LWA is appealing the penalty.

On Nov. 3, a limited teaching license was approved for Marcy Goettl.
